Hardware questions

What operating systems and handheld devices does the RadioWorks software run on?

The RadioWorks client runs on MS-DOS 5 and 6, and Windows CE 2.11 and later. RadioWorks has been installed on many different devices running these operating systems. The client also runs on Win32 operating systems like Windows 95, Windows NT, and Windows 2000. This is useful for storeroom management and support staff who work primarily at a desk and occasionally need to enter inventory transactions. The desktop client is also for contingency use, in case wireless networking is temporarily unavailable.

We strongly recommend that customers select only ruggedized handheld computers. Ruggedized devices are built solidly, include features like hard rubber edges and sealed keypads, and are designed to withstand repeated drops and harsh environments. Intermec and Symbol are two leading manufacturers of ruggedized handheld computers, but installations are possible on other brands.

We also recommend that customers choose handhelds with a full alphanumeric keypad. The repeated inconvenience of fumbling with handwriting recognition or graphical keypads discourages use of the devices, and in the long term offers no savings in time or money.

Can I run RadioWorks with off-the-shelf consumer model handheld devices?

This is not a good idea. Consumer model devices won’t have full alphanumeric keypads or built-in barcode scanners. They also are not ruggedized and break easily when dropped. Some sites with consumer model devices have problems with theft.

We recommend devices specially designed for storeroom use that are ruggedized and have built-in laser scanners and full keypads. They cost more but for a good reason.

Besides the handheld computers, what sort of wireless equipment is needed?

A typical storeroom needs one or two access points. An access point is a radio that mounts on a wall or ceiling and plugs into a network with a typical network cable. They look a lot like external printer interface boxes. Access points require some one-time configuration, but often access points ship with a default configuration that is appropriate, making configuration unnecessary.

You do not need coverage over an entire site. Covering the storeroom is all that’s required.

We have older Intermec Janus 2020 computers that run a proprietary 900 MHz network protocol through a 9180 network controller. Can I use this equipment?

Yes. We have a Windows NT device driver for the 9180 network controller. You can use your older equipment.

Software questions

How does RadioWorks security work?

It works the same way security does within the regular Maximo desktop applications. At the database level, the user name and password are verified at login, then actual database transactions are done using the Maximo username and password. RadioWorks also uses settings from Maximo Signature Security to implement menu-level permissions by group.

How does RadioWorks for Maximo handle receipts against pay-on-receipt purchase orders?

Receipts for pay-on-receipt purchase orders are handled correctly and completely. An invoice is generated for each receipt. If an invoice for a previous receipt is untouched since it was created, new receipts will be added to that invoice instead of a new one.

Can RadioWorks for Maximo run in batch mode?

No. Even if we designed it to run in batch mode, that wouldn’t be very useful. Batch mode operation creates more problems than it solves.

Why is RadioWorks better than say running Maximo on tablets using Citrix?

Because it still takes multiple mouse clicks and pen taps to do something as simple as entering one cycle count.

Installation questions

What Oracle objects does RadioWorks for Maximo place into a Maximo database?

RadioWorks requires one package, called RWMAX. A different version of RWMAX is provided for each version of Maximo. RadioWorks requires no tables, triggers, or other database objects.

Does RadioWorks require the Maximo password to run?

No, RadioWorks does not require the Maximo password. RadioWorks does requires a user account with sufficient grants to the tables it needs to read and modify. While the usual choice for this account is the maximo account, another account can be set up expressly for this purpose if desired.

When I upgrade Maximo, what is required to make sure RadioWorks continues to work?
